A degenerative condition, spinal stenosis results from a narrowing of the spinal canal at one or multiple levels. This concern can be caused by injury, the natural aging process, arthritis, or another factor. Common symptoms of spinal stenosis include pain, loss of mobility, numbness, or stability issues. Spinal Stenosis Procedures

Our practice is dedicated to providing the most effective treatment available, and non-surgical methods are recommended whenever possible to help alleviate discomfort. We have found that minimally invasive techniques are often sufficient to achieve the desired outcome; however, in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Depending on your unique anatomical needs, symptoms, and lifestyle preferences, your customized treatment plan may include one or more of the following therapies:

Non-Surgical: Physical therapy can be one of the best ways to enhance mobility and reduce discomfort associated with spinal stenosis. Additionally, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, rest, and/or a back brace may be recommended to help ease pain and inflammation. We will typically advise following a non-surgical program for at least six months before suggesting a surgical approach.

Decompressive Laminectomy: The most common surgical technique to address spinal stenosis of the lower back, this procedure involves removing bony tissue (called the lamina) from the affected area to release pressure on the spinal nerve roots. This treatment may be performed with or without a fusion.

Laminotomy: While a laminectomy is the complete removal of the lamina, a laminotomy removes a smaller portion of this bony structure, which is designed to cover and protect the spinal canal and spinal cord.

Fusion: This procedure is designed to stabilize the spine by permanently fusing two or more vertebrae together. The cushioning disc between the spinal bones is removed (a technique called a discectomy) and replaced with a bone graft.

Foraminotomy: Another type of decompression surgery, this technique opens up the foramen—the opening through which the nerve roots pass—by removing some of the obstructing bone. This passageway can narrow, causing the symptoms of spinal stenosis.
