What is a Shoulder Capsular Reconstruction?
A shoulder capsular reconstruction is a minimally invasive procedure used to tighten a loose shoulder capsule and restore normal shoulder function.
The Procedure. A shoulder capsular reconstruction is a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure. Two or three very tiny incisions are made on the shoulder. An arthroscopic camera is placed in the shoulder so the joint structures can be viewed on a nearby television monitor. The following steps complete the procedure:
- Small holes are made in the shoulder bone
- Suture anchors are placed in the holes
- The sutures are passed through the shoulder capsule, carefully bringing it together for a tightening effect
- Special surgical knots are made to ensure the sutures remain in place and the capsule stays tight
- The incisions are carefully closed
You will return home after the effects of surgical anaesthesia and pain medications wear off. Physical therapy after surgery is an important part of the recovery process. Our specialists carefully track your progress throughout the entire recovery period and slowly allow you to return to normal everyday activities when ready.
What Condition Does a Shoulder Capsular Reconstruction Treat?
A shoulder capsular reconstruction is a treatment option for massive rotator cuff tears. Symptoms surgical candidates typically have included:
- Pain
- Weakness
- Decreased range of motion
- Instability
Ageing processes usually cause massive tears. Sports and physical activity-related injuries may also be a cause. The first step in the treatment process is receiving a formal diagnosis. Our specialists use a medical history review, physical examination, and medical imaging studies to accurately diagnose massive rotator cuff tears.
