What is Revision Spine Surgery?

Spine surgery is more advanced and effective than ever. The overwhelming majority of patients’ results are significant and sustained. In rare instances not caused by the surgeon or patient, spine surgery may not relieve symptoms and a revision spine surgery may need to be performed. The goal of revision spine surgery is to decrease symptoms and treat the condition causing them.

• Revision artificial disc replacement
• Revision laminectomy
• Revision spinal fusion

And more. When possible, revision spine surgery is performed minimally invasively to decrease surgical trauma and shorten recovery time. A thorough medical history, complete physical examination, and diagnostic imaging studies (x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans) allow the revision specialist to accurately diagnosis the patient’s condition and create a customized revision surgery treatment plan.

What Condition Does Revision Spine Surgery Treat?

Revision spine surgery treats back and/or extremity pain that does not improve 3-6 months after surgery and does not respond to nonsurgical treatment options. Reasons for such pain include but are not limited to:

• Disc herniation
• Hardware malfunction
• Nerve damage
• Scar tissue
• Spine fusion failure

Nonsurgical treatment options such as the following often decrease symptoms:

• Corticosteroid injections
• Medications
• Nerve blocks
• Physical therapy

When nonsurgical treatment options do not provide relief, revision surgery may be recommended.
