Minimally Invasive Discectomy

Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes portions of a lumbar intervertebral disc to relieve back and leg pain.
Why Choose OIBO? ▶

What is Minimally Invasive Discectomy (Microdiscectomy)?

Microdiscectomy is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia that uses small incisions and microscopic instruments to decompress nerves and relieve herniated disc symptoms that don't respond to nonsurgical treatments. This technique is particularly effective in treating sciatica, a painful burning sensation that radiates from the hip down the back of the thigh and leg. After the procedure, patients experience quick relief and minimal recovery time due to the minimal surgical trauma involved. However, complete nerve healing may take longer for symptoms like weakness and numbness to improve. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained spine specialists perform microdiscectomies, and early diagnosis is key to symptom relief. If you are experiencing lower back and/or lower extremity pain, please contact us to schedule an appointment and discuss your options for treatment.

A minimally invasive discectomy (microdiscectomy) removes portions of nerve compressing lumbar intervertebral disc that causes lower back and/or lower extremity pain. A microdiscectomy is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Steps used to perform the procedure are:

  • Incision. A small one-inch incision is made along the lower back.
  • Exposure. Muscles are gently retracted so the compressed nerve can be viewed.
  • Discectomy. Tiny instruments and microscopic guidance are used to remove pieces of the disc and arthritic bone.
  • Closure. Stitches and adhesive strips close the incision.

Microdiscectomy decompresses the nerve and relieves symptoms very quickly, if not immediately. There is very little surgical trauma so patients are able to recover and return to normal activities shortly after surgery.

What Conditions Does Microdiscectomy Treat?

Microdiscectomy is used to treat herniated disc symptoms that do not respond to nonsurgical treatment options. A microdiscectomy is especially effective in treating sciatica—a burning pain runs from the hip to the back of the thigh and legs. Sciatica relief usually occurs very quickly after surgery. Herniated disc symptoms like weakness and numbness may take longer to improve because complete nerve healing is necessary.

Our board-certified and fellowship-trained spine specialists perform microdiscectomies. If you experience lower back and/or lower extremity pain, please contact our office to arrange an appointment.
