What is Ankle Fracture Fixation?

What You Should Know About Ankle Fractures:

Ankle fracture fixation is a crucial surgical procedure that realigns broken ankle bones, ensuring proper healing and restoring function. Typically performed on an outpatient basis, this surgery involves making a small incision, aligning the fracture, and using screws or plates for permanent fixation. Ankle fractures, caused by accidents, injuries, or falls, require immediate medical attention with symptoms like bruising, pain, and swelling.

Ankle fracture fixation is a surgical procedure that aligns and fixates fractured ankle bones so they can heal properly. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, although procedures for severe fractures may require a one or more night hospital stay.

During this procedure, the following steps are performed:

  • A small incision is made in the ankle
  • Ankle tendons and muscles are retracted
  • Surgical instruments are used to anatomically align the fracture and temporarily fixate it
  • Screws or a plate and screws are used to permanently fixate the bone

The incision is carefully closed and sterilely dressed to prevent infection and ensure proper healing. A comfortable plaster splint is formed to the ankle and lower leg and set to a neutral position.

What Does Ankle Fracture Fixation Treat?

An ankle fracture is a serious injury that requires immediate medical attention. X-rays are taken to determine the severity and location of the fracture. Fractures that cannot heal on their own and/or change the anatomy and function of the ankle joint require surgical intervention. Accidents, injuries, falls, and direct blows may cause ankle fractures. Symptoms that typically present include the following:

  • Bruising
  • Difficulty weight-bearing
  • Pain
  • Swelling
